WhatsApp is a powerful marketing tool.
As a blogger/marketer, you can no longer ignore it.
Right from small to medium to large businesses, everyone is using it.
But did you know, you can use WhatsApp to drive instant free traffic to your blog and also track it too? (without using WhatsApp Group)
Yes. It’s true.
In this post you are not only going to learn how to increase blog traffic using WhatsApp but also learn how to track the performance of the traffic from it. Some refer it to as WhatsApp Marketing.
It’s very easy and simple. The best part is that anyone can do it.
The very first thing that you need to do is to install WhatsApp on your smartphone.
You can directly visit the official WhatsApp website https://www.whatsapp.com/download/ and install it on your smartphone (it’s available for Android, Windows phones & iPhones.)
Besides, you can also download and install WhatsApp on your Windows PC as well as MAC.
The next step is to decide the blog post or web page that you want to promote to drive targeted traffic to it.
Once you have decided the blog post/web page to promote, you will need to track how many clicks the blog post or web page link got after you shared it on WhatsApp.
Get More Targeted Traffic For Blog/Website:
To do that I suggest you two free and simple tools:
- Bit.ly: It is a URL shortening tool which tracks performance of the link.
- Google UTM: This is a free Google tool to create custom and shortened links that can be tracked in Google Analytics.
For this tutorial, I will go with Bit.ly tool as it is easier and simple to use.
Now I will open Bit.ly website and log-in to my account. If you don’t have an account then sign-up to it. It’s free and offers two types of accounts free and paid.
In our case, it will be a free account.
Let’s look at an example to understand this whole method clearly.
So in my case, let’s say I want to promote one of my blog posts for people who are serious about pursuing blogging.
After I log-in to my account, I will click on the Orange colored “Create” button at the top right corner as can be seen in the image below.
It will open a panel in the right hand corner.
In the “Paste Long URL” box, I will copy paste my blog post’s link and then click on the “Create” button at the bottom.
I will now have a shortened URL which I will copy paste in my WhatsApp Status.
If anyone clicks on the link in the WhatsApp status then I can see it inside my account on Bit.ly.
I will be able to see my clicks the link got.
After installing the app, the next step is double clicking on the WhatsApp icon to open it.
Once the app open, you will see three tabs: Chat, Status and Calls.
Click on the “Status” tab and you will see a “My Status. Tap to add status update” text which has a Green colored “+” sign button beside it.
Now you have two options as can be seen in the image below.
You can either click on the Green colored “+” sign button or you can click on either the Pen or Camera icons located at the right hand bottom side.
Let’s look at each option individually:
Option 1: Choosing photo+ text option.
If you choose the “My Status. Tap to add status update” text then it will open the camera of your phone and also the photo gallery.
Now you can either take a new photo or select an existing one from the gallery.
After selecting the photo, you will see a text box come up below the selected photo. You can type a caption for the photo and press the “Send” button.
This will set your status.
But there’s a drawback.
If you add a link within the photo caption then it is not clickable. Thus it is not valuable for you or for anyone who wants to send traffic to their website or blog.
That’s why the Pen icon option is much better.
Option 2: Pen Icon.
When you choose this option, you will see a plain colored background which has the text “Type A Status”.
Here you will type whatever content that you want and also paste the link of your webpage or blog post. Once the link is posted, a link preview will automatically come up.
If you look at the image below you will see that I have written some content, pasted the link to one of my blog posts which has brought up the link preview.
You have the option to remove this preview/thumbnail image and add your own design in its place. You can use a free tool like Canva to create awesome visual content for your marketing needs.
It comes with “WhatsApp Story” template so you don’t have to worry about dimensions of your design.
Here’s a tip.
Keep your status content/text as short and to the point. No need to write long form content or essays.
The intention is to generate curiosity in the mind of the person checking your status and make him/her click on the link.
How To Track WhatsApp Status Link Clicks:
Here’s how you can see how many people clicked on your WhatsApp status link and contributed to your website or blog traffic.
- Log-in to your Bit.ly account.
- In the left hand side panel you will see all the links you created with each link showing total number of clicks it received as can be seen in the image below.
You can click on the individual links to see more link click details such as referrers, location and time of those link clicks.
One thing that you must remember is that the Bit.ly does not give you individual split of the link clicks (at least not for the free account).
So if you end up sharing the same shortened URL on your WhatsApp status, Social media account and even emails then there’s no way to know how many clicks came from each of these channels.
So it is highly recommended that you create separate links for each communication channel and share those links only those channels only. It will be easy for you to keep a track of link clicks.
So did it work?
I tried the technique explained above on a post that I published on May 1 and promoted its link on my WhatsApp status. The link on the status was there for 24 hours and the result can be seen below.
The best part about this method is that it is one of the best strategies to implement that will get your blog more traffic, build your email list and do much more.
Now you that you know how to use WhatsApp to drive more traffic to your blog and track it too, go try it.
It will definitely change the way you use WhatsApp for marketing
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
